When referring to “radical feminism,” some may assume that the term radical is just a pejorative term intended to disparage the philosophy of “feminism.” However, that is not the case. While feminism seeks to establish and defend economic, political, and social equality for women, radical feminism seeks to destroy patriarchy.
Radical feminism is far more…well, radical than feminism.  Radical feminism seeks to expunge every expression of patriarchy within society.  They see patriarchy as a systematic oppression of women.  Consequently, radical feminists seek to destroy patriarchy by opposing any and all gender-based roles within society.  In fact, the radical feminists’ militant opposition to patriarchy has actually resulted in misandry (i.e. the hatred of men).  Robin Morgan, editor of MS Magazine said, “I feel that ‘man-hating’ is an honorable and viable political act, that the oppressed have a right to class-hatred against the class that is oppressing them” (WikiQuote). Further, Valerie Solanas, another well-known radical feminist said, “To call a man an animal is to flatter him…” (WikiQuote). Surely, one can see that a philosophy built on such hatred is self-defeating in the long run. Biology, itself, will see to that.
While one may not think that such a philosophy could ever gain a foothold in our society, radical feminists’ war on gender distinctions has had far reaching implications in our society.
First it has denigrated and marginalized motherhood and homemaking. Women who find contentment and fulfillment through homemaking and rearing a family are viewed with contempt by radical feminists. Vivian Gornick, a noted radical feminist said, “Being a housewife is an illegitimate profession…. The choice to serve and be protected and plan towards being a family-maker is a choice that shouldn’t be. The heart of radical feminism is to change that” (The Daily Illini, April 25, 1981).
Second, radical feminism seeks to redefine the structure of the home and family, and sadly, they have had much success. In their effort to remove all gender-based roles, the institution of marriage has come into focus within their crosshairs. Radical feminism has sought to redefine what constitutes marriage and a family. They reason, “Why should the institution of marriage be defined as heterosexual?” “Why shouldn’t two men or two women be allowed to marry each other?”
On June 26, 2013, the Supreme Court struck down as unconstitutional the “Defense of Marriage Act” (DOMA), which barred the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriages legalized by the states. Presently, there are 13 states that have legalized same-sex marriages, and these marriages are now fully recognized by the federal government as well.  What many fail to realize is that same-sex marriage is not just the agenda of the homosexual community, but also of the radical feminist movement, for it is yet another strike against patriarchy.
Third, radical feminism has attempted to eradicate male spiritual leadership in the church.  The radical feminists see the gender-based role distinctions the Bible teaches (e.g. 1 Corinthians 11, 14; 1 Timothy 2, 3; Titus 1) as being oppressive and unfair to women. Thus they have sought to reconstruct religious hierarchy to be inclusive of women. Sadly, they have been successful in this war on gender in this realm too. Consider how many religious bodies in the past thirty years have opened their pulpits and their governing bodies to women that were once closed to them.
In spite of their zeal and their successes, radical feminists are misguided. They fight to remove themselves from what they consider oppression, but fail to comprehend the weight of their new-found “liberty.” Their pursuit for equality has evolved into a pursuit for sameness, which can never, nor should ever, be achieved. As we examine the path, fruits, and legacy of radical feminism, we encourage to you, to consider what is has done to our society and even the church. It is our hope that you will teach future generations about these issues, and as always, we hope you will think on these things.
